Sybase IQ Multiplex Qualified by EMC on
10-Terabyte Data Warehouse
SYNOPSIS: EMC and Sybase recently
conducted joint tests that qualified Sybase Adaptive Server IQ Multiplex
with EMC Enterprise Storage Network products. The process demonstrated:
- IQ Multiplex effectively
manages 10TB data warehouses.
- The IQ Multiplex, column-indexing
feature significantly compresses large data volumes.
- The EMC/Sybase
combination enables more companies to economically implement
very-large-databases (VLDB) and manage increasing amounts of
information.
May 15, 2001 - Sybase Inc. EMERYVILLE,
CA (NASDAQ: SYBS) yesterday announced the completion of
qualification tests of Sybase® Adaptive Server® IQ Multiplex with EMC
Enterprise Storage Network™ (ESN) products. The tests determined that IQ
Multiplex effectively manages a 10-terabyte data warehouse on EMC
solutions, including EMC Symmetrix® Enterprise Storage systems and
software, and the Connectrix™ family of Fibre Channel products.
Additionally, the tests provide a guideline for customers wishing to
build very-large-database warehouses.
Sybase also evaluated IQ Multiplex's scalability and data compression
capabilities for large volumes of analytical data, confirming that IQ
Multiplex data compression and column-indexing are more cost effective
compared to traditional, relational technology. “ With the continuing
growth of content collected from a variety of devices, such as the
Internet and wireless communications tools, managing information
successfully is becoming increasingly important, however EMC/Sybase
combination enables more companies to economically implement
very-large-databases (VLDB) and manage increasing amount of information” said
Yves Khoneisser, Technical Manager, Sybase Products Middle East.
"IQ Multiplex and EMC enabled us to deliver a competitive,
cost-effective solution that handles massive amounts of data at a
fraction of the cost of using traditional database technology," said
Greg Dale, CTO of comScore, a Sybase IQ Multiplex customer that provides
Web-consumer data services. comScore recently won the Grand Prize in the
Winter Corporation Database Scalability Survey in the NT category.
IQ Multiplex offers unique storage efficiency advantages over older,
traditional-technology data warehouses that directly translate into a
cost-effective, 24x7 data warehouse architecture. "Through data
compression and storage efficiency, IQ Multiplex will allow data
warehouses to use EMC's unique software products such as EMC TimeFinder™,
Symmetrix Remote Data Facility™ (SRDF) and others," said Paul
Krneta, Sybase director of IQ Multiplex. "The usage of IQ Multiplex with
EMC’s unique software will create a new breed of an IQ Multiplex-based
VLDB that has well-proven enterprise features -- such as
high-availability, disaster recovery and near-zero downtime to be delivered
to our valuable customers in a competitive, cost-effective price. This
was impossible with traditional data warehouse technology” said George Khouri,
Managing Director, Sybase Products Middle East.
Data warehousing has traditionally been complex due to the use of
transactional DBMS as a data warehouse engine. Sybase and EMC are
delivering information access, query performance, and data loading 10 to
100 times faster than transactional databases. This is due to IQ
Multiplex's patented, column-based, bit-wise indexes and EMC's Symmetrix
information storage systems. The performance continues even as the number
of users and the amounts of data increase dramatically.
Sybase and EMC are also receiving positive feedback on the testing from
industry analysts. Richard Winter, a world expert in VLDB, said,
"EMC and Sybase are changing the rules for storing and using large
amounts of data. IQ Multiplex creates a paradigm shift in click stream,
call detail record and customer data storage and analysis."
The EMC/Sybase test used approximately 10 terabytes of EMC Symmetrix
storage with IQ Multiplex v. 12.4.2. Over 40 billion rows of data were
loaded with the largest table containing over 30 billion records. To
