presentations, explaning the importance of upgrading
to ASE version 12.5 to enable a smooth transition
into e-Business.
“Sybase® Adaptive Server® Enterprise (ASE) 12.5
meets the evolving needs of e-Business data
management, and supporting the more traditional
RDBMS requirements of complex, transaction-heavy
processing where performance, security and
scalability are critical. We at Sybase, as a
technology maker, believe in ourselves. In fact we
are not competing with anyone, rather I would like
to say that, we are co-existing with everyone for
the benefit of our customers, any time, anywhere”
said Roman Miller, Regional Pre-Sales Manager –
EMEA
Key features include:
Innovative advances in data management that exploit
the operational efficiencies of e-Business through
XML/XQL support, high-performance execution of
Enterprise Java Beans, and management of external,
non-relational content
Dynamic performance with dynamic tuning for
uninterrupted access to data despite the
unpredictable demands of the Internet
Enhanced security with row-level access control and
encrypted communications to protect critical company
and customer data
ASE 12.5 achieved 140,239.97 TPM with a
price/performance ratio of $16.31/tpmc, using a HP
Server rp8400 system
This benchmark represents the best price/performance
ratio for Unix-based tested by the TPC-C
Sybase's flagship product, ASE 12.5, supports the
heavy data processig needs of traditional OLTP and
the complex data manipulation needs of decision
support systems, while providing the flexibiltiy,
scalability, performance and security neede to
support new, e-Business applications.
The new ASE 12.5 includes innovations for storing
and searching XML documents and executing Java
in the database to support companies rapidly
transitioning to e-Business processes, also it
continues to support the transaction-heavy data
processing needs of traditional online transaction
processing (OLTP) and the complex data manipulation
needs of decision support systems (DSS), while
providing flexibility, scalability, performance, and
security for Web-based transaction processing. “ASE
12.5's commitment to openness and performance gives
customers an intelligent choice for managing their
mission-critical, transaction-intensive applications
and data in mixed environments, therefore enable
them to make a smooth transition to e-Business”
Said Yves Khoneisser, Professional Services Manager,
Sybase ME.
Key New Features Address e-Business Requirements
As businesses continue to transition processes and
transactions to the Web, a company's infrastructure
must be able to take full advantage of Web standards
and protocols to achieve greater operational
efficiency from e-Business. ASE 12.5 addresses these
requirements with advanced features that work
seemingly effortlessly with Internet standards.
“Advanced XML and Java functionality in databases
is essential for e-business data management,"
said Mark Shainman, senior research analyst at META
Consulting Group. "Companies moving to
e-Business processes should look for database
managers with these capabilities, as well as dynamic
performance and openness for integration."
Key new features of ASE 12.5 include advanced
e-Business data management functionality, dynamic
performance enhancements and strong security
features.
Advanced e-Business Data Management
Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 12.5 supports
advanced XML document indexing and management
including XQL, a query language to search XML
information residing in the database. This
capability, which is built using patent-pending fast
indexes for XML technology, helps to ensure
performance-optimized searches of large XML
documents. These flexible XML features can aid
developers in the cost-effective management of large
quantities of XML-based transaction data by reducing
or eliminating the need for extra programming and
translation. In addition, using XML search
capabilities in ASE 12.5, Web content can be
dynamically generated from the existing data and XML
documents.
Increasingly, XML is becoming the document of
record, and ASE 12.5 is the enterprise-class
relational database that can effectively deal with
XML documents in any format. With innovations like
XQL support and high-performance execution of
Enterprise Java Beans within the database,
Sybase ASE 12.5 can help empower enterprises with
the cutting-edge data management tools and
performance they need to take full advantage of the
operational efficiencies available through
e-Business.ASE 12.5 also supports high-performance
execution of Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) and Java
Stored Procedures. EJB and Java Stored Procedure
support within the database can offer faster
development of applications that utilize Java
component models, providing a secure,
performance-optimized environment that marries open,
component-based development with a high-performance
database server. With Sybase's PowerJ Java
development environment developers can easily deploy
EJBs within ASE.
By using ASE 12.5, our valuable customers can
benefit from quicker and more flexible access to
their critical financial data. The ability to use
Java Stored Procedures within ASE 12.5, our
financial reporting solution not only delivers much
better performance, but also provides a simpler—and
more elegant—way to code our key generation
algorithms without building custom applications. In
addition, the XML features allow us to more easily
expose data to our financial application.
In addition to the EJB and XML features, Sybase ASE
12.5 allows developers to quickly access
non-relational information from within the database
without necessarily using external programs or
additional coding. This feature, easily managed
through Sybase Central™, integrates with ASE's
enhanced text and XML searches.
Dynamic Performance
With the increasingly unpredictable workloads the
Internet forces upon business applications, the
database must be able to respond quickly and
reliably to changing demands. Sybase Adaptive Server
Enterprise 12.5 has dynamic tuning features that
allow database administrators (DBAs) to quickly
adjust the server's performance online without
requiring the system to be restarted. ASE allows
DBAs to dynamically manage total memory available,
number of user connections, number of locks, number
of open objects, procedure and disk input/output
structures and adjust configuration parameters to
deal with server load changes without restarting, to
create greater server uptime.
“ASE's flexible querying and interrogation of data
on the fly have enabled us to perform
ground-breaking genetic research," said Michael
Heaney, database manager for The Institute for
Genomic Research. "Performance is critical with
the high volume of data our researchers process both
in-house and over the Web. ASE 12.5's dynamic
performance enhancements coupled with XML and Java
support will provide the manageability and
performance we need to further expand our research
capabilities."
Strong and Flexible Security Features – Major
Concerns of e-Business :
Sybase is also tackling privacy and security—major
concerns of e-Business. The new version of ASE
provides row-level access control, encrypted
communications using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
protocol and server authentication using digital
certificates from a certificate authority or use of
tools that are part of public key infrastructure
(PKI). Row-level access control allows system
administrators and security officers to easily
define security policies at the data level in order
to protect sensitive information even at the
individual record level. Sybase has fully embedded
SSL encryption and PKI certificate protocols in ASE
12.5 to help protect data from accidental disclosure
as well as wire taps.
Additional Enhancements
Sybase customers will also find additional benefits
in ASE 12.5 that support today's RDBMS needs. They
include:
Compressed backups to aid in reducing archival costs
SQL Debug to assist in application development
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) support
for easier system management
Cluster support for Veritas, Sun, IBM, Compaq and HP
for high availability
Optimized management of temporary tables for lower
overhead
Multiple Language support with Unicode UTF-16 for
international data
Wider columns and longer rows with database pages up
to 16K for improved performance of complex
enterprise resource planning systems
Enhancements to Component Integration Services for
remote query optimization, heterogeneous data access
and heterogeneous transaction support
